The Executive Secretary, Nigerian Educational Research and Development Council (NERDC) - Prof. Salisu Shehu, accompanied by his Management team, paid a courtesy visit to the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) on Thursday, 20th February, 2025.

Prof. Shehu, who assumed office as the Executive Secretary of NERDC on 23rd December, 2024, intimating that his aim of visiting was to identify with the Council’s partners. He added that the visit was to review NERDC partnership engagement with UBEC, as well as seek ways to strengthen the partnership for the good of the system.

The Executive Secretary, while reiterating that the partnership with UBEC has been vibrant and result-oriented informed that “with this relationship, NERDC has been able to adapt the extant 9-year basic education curriculum for learners with visual impairments; developed a comprehensive benchmark and standard for books and other instructional material assessment in Nigeria and the recent review; as well as the renewal of the 9-Year Basic Education Curriculum which was made possible through UBEC's intervention”.

While re-echoing NERDc's commitment to achieving the renewed hope, as enunciated by Mr. President, Prof. Shehu stated that the Research Institute’s management is poised to working with UBEC to ensure that all Nigerian children have unfettered access to quality education, and that the Council is ready to work with the Commission towards a new basic education where indeed the recipients will be nationally relevant and globally competitive. He informed that the new curriculum which is a complete departure from what we used to have (as the review adopted the competency and outcome-based approach) will be in schools nationwide by September 2025.

He outlined areas of collaboration and support sought by NERDC to include massive state-based teacher capacity building programmes on the new curriculum as this is not the usual in-service training that teachers receive but one that is strictly focused on the curriculum and its implementation process considering that it is the first time Nigeria will be implementing such competency and outcome-based curriculum.

In her response, the Executive Secretary of UBEC, Hajia Aisha Garba thanked the NERDC management for coming and stressed that UBEC will do anything within the ambits of its mandate to continue supporting every process or initiative aimed at ensuring access to Basic Education for every Nigerian child (within the school age) which is one of the Commission's major policy thrust.

The visit had the Executive Secretaries of NERDC and UBEC, as well as management teams of the two agencies in attendance.
